Project Description

As part of an infrastructure project for Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in Bern, vario service crossings were installed for the first time in September 2026. The system was installed across 16 tracks in a busy train stabling yard.

Requirements and Initial Conditions

In busy train stabling yards, personnel safety is a key priority, while disruption to railway operations must be kept to a minimum. To reduce track possession times and keep construction costs down, fast installation and straightforward handling of the crossing components were essential.

Fast and Efficient Installation

vario stood out for its quick and straightforward installation. The installation team needed just 30 minutes on average to complete a fully operational service crossing. These short installation times helped minimise track possession times and keep construction costs low.

Another key advantage of vario is its adaptability, which allowed the system to be installed in the turnout area in Bern without difficulty. It was also combined with pede crossing panels in the areas between the tracks, providing a solution tailored to the specific requirements on site.
