Securing railway infrastructure with the grid universal panel
The safety of railway infrastructure, particularly at stations, in tunnels, and on bridges, presents planners and operators with complex challenges. Protecting staff and passengers, as well as clearly delineating hazardous areas, is essential to preventing accidents. KRAIBURG STRAIL has developed an innovative solution to meet these requirements: the grid universal panel.
How the universal panel works
The universal panel features a surface with irregularly arranged pyramid studs. This unique geometry effectively deters individuals from trespassing onto the tracks or using them as a shortcut. The panels can also be installed as an additional barrier to reinforce fencing systems. The system is designed for speeds of up to 160 km/h, has integrated drainage and is suitable for all sleeper types.
Application areas of the universal panel
The grid panel is used in various infrastructure projects to prevent unauthorized access and enhance safety.
- Stations: Installed at stations such as Ulzburg-Süd in Schleswig-Holstein and Hackerbrücke in Munich, Germany, the universal panel effectively keeps passengers off the tracks. At Ulzburg-Süd, 30 m² were installed in less than four hours, demonstrating the efficiency of the system.
- Bridges: In Sion, the panel was installed on the Pont du Rhône and the Pont du Canal to prevent pedestrians and cyclists from unauthorized access.
- Tunnels: In tunnels, which are sensitive areas, the panel acts as an effective barrier. In Corsica, following accidents involving animals, all railroad tunnels were fitted with the panel to keep out wild and grazing animals seeking shade in high temperatures.
- Supplement to fences: The panels can also reinforce existing fences. In the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald (Germany), they were installed on the border with Poland to contain the spread of swine fever.

Easy installation meets sustainability
A key advantage of the universal panel is its straightforward and fast installation. Pre-assembled elements fit neatly into the sleeper spaces and are secured with special screws, while removal for maintenance is equally simple.
The panels are not only robust, but also environmentally friendly. They are made from recycled rubber granulate, which is coated with a high-quality, UV-stable new rubber layer. After their long service life, the panels can be reused.
