Level crossing with inno and B kerbstone installed in just three hours
The increasingly tight track possession times in modern track construction require solutions that are not only robust, but above all quick to install. For this project, the choice fell on the efficient combination of the inno system, which is independent of sleeper spacing, and the B kerbstone, which requires no foundation. It took a team of four just three hours to install the entire 5.4-meter-long level crossing. Thanks to the B kerbstone’s foundation-free design, the track could be reopened to traffic immediately after installation.

The STRAIL B kerbstone is a solid, wide concrete kerbstone that requires no prefabricated foundation elements and is installed directly on compacted ballast. No excavation of ballast in front of the sleeper head, no intervention in the subgrade, and no leveling layer needed. The result: significantly shorter installation times.
Logistics on the construction site are also simplified: there are fewer “lost units”, no need for additional foundation elements and installation is carried out in one continuous operation. Thanks to the large contact surface, the B kerbstone also offers better load transfer, which is particularly relevant for crossings with heavy traffic.
Another advantage: the design allows adjustments to be made in both vertical and horizontal directions without time-consuming reworking. During installation, there is no need to slow down traffic on the opposite track, making the system ideal for tight construction schedules and work during ongoing operations.
Advantages for infrastructure, drainage and long-term safety
The STRAIL D kerbstone is a variant that also has an integrated drainage system. This means that surface water from the road is drained away from the level crossing and can seep into the adjacent soil. This is a reliable solution for preventing puddles, waterlogging and ice formation at busy crossings.
Structurally identical to the T kerbstone, the D kerbstone fits all standard STRAIL outer panels and can be installed quickly and efficiently using STRAIL precast foundations. Even under heavy loads, it delivers lasting stability while protecting adjacent components through controlled water drainage.
This ensures that the track system remains functional and safe in the long term, even in extreme weather conditions.
