AT A GLANCE

A visit in 2024 to the level crossing in Sunningdale, where the STRAIL level crossing system was installed in 2003, shows that it is still in very good condition after 21 years, despite the increasing volume of traffic.

The level crossing is located near Ascot racecourse in south-west London, a region with high traffic volumes. The crossing has two lanes in each direction.

EG49 sleepers and CEN60 rails were used for its installation in October 2003. The installation took place over two weekends, with each track being completely renewed separately with new ballast and STRAIL inner and outer panels with steel T-profiles were installed.

Network Rail Standards state a minimum 15 years life service from level crossing decking.Sunningdale has long exceeded this and is a demonstration of the duribility and high quality of STRAIL level crossing systems.
